- Explain what scraffito is and the process of making this tray. (slab, underglaze, glazing) scraffito is layering underglaze on wet clay until it's covered and then using various tools to carve out or scratch patterns into the clay and the underglaze. When the clay is dry it's fired and then it can be given a cover glaze so that the underglaze doesn't scratch away for everyday wear and tear.
- What do you find successful about your piece and what might you change if do it again? I think my piece is successful in its composition and the dynamic nature of the scene. If I had to change something I would have done one half red underglaze and the other black underglaze to achieve the sky affect I was trying to do and unfortunately turned out to scratch away most of the red after firing.
- What did you learn from this project? That working in the opposite (adding lights instead of shadows) is really hard and it's a lot harder with clay and underglaze, the designs have to be almost 2D or they don't turn out as well.
